Manualized Treatments for Insomnia, PTSD, and Specific Phobia

We have found that therapy can be a wonderful place for building insight and strengths, becoming more in touch with your identities, and understanding how your past and current contexts have played a role in your development. Manualized treatments are a subset of therapy approaches designed and extensively tested to target specific concerns within a set amount of time.

Manualized Treatments offered: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), and Prolonged Exposure (PE)

Please note: We do not prescribe medications or sleep medications (our practice offers therapy and assessments only)

  • Manualized treatments are an excellent option when someone has a clear idea of what they would like to work on in therapy and are also interested in a time-limited approach. As such, manualized treatments may not be a good choice for people who are interested in starting long-term therapy. We offer manualized treatments that address concerns around trauma, insomnia, and phobias.

  • The treatment process generally lasts 6-12 sessions, depending on the concern and how quickly you respond to the treatment. While these therapies have robust research demonstrating their efficacy in helping people achieve therapy outcomes, manualized therapies can also be challenging.

Briefer (6 session) treatment may be a good fit for individuals who have received CPT or prolonged exposure in the past and are looking for a "tune-up."

  • During the course of the manualized treatment, it is quite normal for symptoms to intensify briefly before they start to improve. However, we will make sure to equip you with the tools and skills needed to manage symptoms that arise and increase your ability to tolerate distress. Additionally, all the manualized treatments we offer have additional activities you will need to complete outside of therapy. If you are not able to make this time commitment, we encourage you to wait until you can make this commitment as the manualized treatments will not be effective if you are not able to complete these activities. Ultimately, the time spent in therapy is very little compared to the life you live outside of therapy. Thus, for any long-term and significant changes it is important that you apply the work you do in therapy in your daily life as well. Many individuals find significant relief by the end of this treatment process- we linked articles below supporting the efficacy of CPT, CBT for insomnia, and Prolonged Exposure.

What therapy will look like:

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy

CPT was developed specifically as a treatment for PTSD and has been extensively demonstrated to be an effective therapy for the reduction of PTSD symptoms. There are two versions of CPT, one which includes exercises that address issues of avoidance around memories of your trauma and one which does not. Both are equally effective treatments, so which one you use will ultimately depend on your preference. We can make this decision together.

CPT has been commonly used with veterans, individuals with histories of assault, and many other individuals presenting with PTSD symptoms.

  • CBT for Insomnia

CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) has been demonstrated to be an effective for the treatment of insomnia. CBT-I works by helping you identify and change the unhelpful cognitive and behavioral patterns that contribute to your sleep concerns. In addition to attending therapy and completing the assigned exercises, it is important to commit to making changes in your regular day to day life to reduce the unhelpful patterns. Without this commitment, the effectiveness of CBT-I is likely to be significantly reduced. While this is a large commitment, we will help support you in building and maintaining the motivation needed to make these changes.

  • Prolonged Exposure

Prolonged exposure is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and specific phobias. This process will teach you to gradually approach your trauma-related memories, feelings and situations that are causing you daily distress, and over time will lead to a shift in symptoms (such as flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of memories related to traumatic event). We will work at your pace.

Note, sessions are 90 minutes in duration so that we have the time to fully support you in processing through difficult memories and experiences.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy and CBT for Insomnia cost 200 for 60 minute intake and subsequent 50 minute sessions at 180

Prolonged Exposures 90 minute sessions are 250

  • We can meet your needs in-person or virtually for our therapy services. If attending a virtual appointment, we utilize a HIPAA compliant video software and ask that you attend the meeting from a private space with good internet connection.

  • While this may differ per person, research supports Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure to take 12 sessions. You are ultimately in control of your treatment, and may choose to terminate at any time. I will discuss the potential concerns that may arise with discontinuing therapy early.

If you have already completed manualized therapy in the past and are seeking a "tune up," we may be able to utilize a brief 6-session model. We can discuss your needs in a consultation appointment.
